It all started with a few notes to my daughters, who were just two and five years old at the time.
As a parent, I found myself asking a question so many of us ask:
What do I most want my children to know?
The world they are growing into is constantly changing and, in many ways, becoming more complicated. I knew I couldn't give them instructions for challenges I couldn't predict. But I could offer them something more enduring: a way of understanding themselves, experiencing life, and navigating the world that could serve them wherever life takes them.

Those notes eventually grew into a book I'm now finalizing. But as I continued writing, the question behind it grew into something bigger:
What does it mean to live well, and how can we become better at it?
In many ways, I'd been exploring a version of that question throughout my career. I'm Afarin Patterson, a human-centered design and research leader with more than 15 years of experience across healthcare, financial services, technology startups, and government. My work has always centered on understanding how people experience and navigate the world around them. Writing the book turned that same curiosity toward life itself, exploring not just how we navigate the world, but how we experience life and participate in shaping it.
What began as a personal project gradually became
What Unites Us All,
an initiative dedicated to exploring the foundations of living well and translating those insights into practical ways to experience life more deeply and participate in shaping it more wisely.
As this work evolved, I kept returning to the question that started it all: What can we give the next generation that will truly serve them?
We can't give young people a manual for a future we can't predict. But we can help them strengthen the foundations to navigate it, shape it, and live well within it.
That conviction led to The Capable Mind Lab, a series of interactive learning experiences designed to strengthen young people's capacity to think, communicate, choose, and act, while exploring how to use those capacities wisely in a world increasingly shaped by AI.
